Ben Ogden Wins Silver, Breaking USA’s 50-Year Cross-Country Medal Drought

Ben Ogden has made history by winning a silver medal in the men’s cross-country skiing sprint at the Milan Cortina Olympics. This achievement marks a significant milestone for the United States, as Ogden is only the second U.S. man to earn an Olympic cross-country skiing medal and the first in over 50 years.

Historic Achievement

The last American to secure a cross-country skiing medal was Bill Koch, who earned silver in the 50k classic at the Innsbruck 1976 Winter Games. Notably, Ogden trained in the same Bill Koch Youth Ski League and has skied alongside Koch throughout his career.

Medal Performance

Ogden showcased his exceptional skills with a remarkable time of three minutes and 40 seconds. Norwegian skier Johannes Hoesflot Klaebo claimed first place, securing his seventh Olympic gold medal with a time of three minutes and 39 seconds. Teammate Oskar Opstad Vike took home the bronze medal in his Olympic debut.

Competition Highlights

  • Ogden set the second fastest time during qualifications.
  • In the quarterfinals, Klaebo used an energy-efficient strategy.
  • Ogden surged from second to first position during a crucial incline, outpacing the competition.
  • During the semifinals, Ogden initially led but narrowly lost to Finland’s Lauri Vuorinen in a photo finish.
  • Ogden advanced to the finals as the fastest “lucky loser.”

American Representation

Three American men qualified for the sprint classic event. JC Schoonmaker, one of Ogden’s teammates, utilized a strategic draft after the climb but ultimately did not make it to the finals.

Ben Ogden’s silver medal not only emphasizes his personal achievement but also breaks a long-standing medal drought for the USA in cross-country skiing, inspiring a new generation of skiers.
