Despite playing 97 First-Class matches for Western Province, van Schalkwyk never made it to the South African national team. He recalled the discouragement he faced and the advice to consider coaching. “I felt I had a lot more to offer,” he said, which led him to pursue opportunities in the USA. Van Schalkwyk now combines his passion for playing cricket with coaching, leading an academy with approximately 175 children in Seattle.
