Ontario Park Hideaway: Discover a Stunning Secret Electric-Blue Lake
Ontario boasts an electric-blue lake, a hidden gem waiting to be explored. McGinnis Lake, located in Petroglyphs Provincial Park, showcases vibrant turquoise waters reminiscent of the famous lakes in Alberta. This unique lake, one of Canada’s few meromictic lakes, features water layers that never fully mix, contributing to its striking color.
Visiting McGinnis Lake
Located just 200 metres from the parking area, McGinnis Lake is accessible without a strenuous hike. Although the emerald waters invite you for a swim, swimming is prohibited. For those desiring a swim, Quarry Bay municipal beach on Stoney Lake is only 1.5 kilometres east of the park entrance.
Explore the Park’s Treasures
Petroglyphs Provincial Park is rich in attractions beyond McGinnis Lake. It is home to the largest known collection of Indigenous rock carvings in Canada. The park’s “Teaching Rocks” feature intricate carvings of turtles, snakes, birds, and humans, providing insight into Indigenous traditions.
The Learning Place Visitor Centre offers opportunities to learn about the Ojibway (Nishnaabe) culture and the teachings of the medicine wheel. Visitors can also enjoy the park’s hiking trails.
