Michael Bay Sues Cadillac F1 Over Super Bowl Ad, Team Seeks Amicable Settlement

Cadillac recently unveiled its first Formula 1 car in a spectacular Super Bowl advertisement. This ambitious launch featured a striking asymmetrical livery and was accompanied by a well-known speech from John F. Kennedy, connecting the advertising campaign to the U.S. space achievements of the 1960s. However, the ad has sparked legal issues involving renowned director Michael Bay.

Michael Bay’s Legal Action Against Cadillac F1

On the Friday prior to the Super Bowl, news broke that Michael Bay filed a lawsuit against Cadillac F1. The acclaimed director, known for his work on blockbuster films such as *Bad Boys*, *The Rock*, and the *Transformers* series, alleges that he collaborated extensively on the ad project since November. His contributions included the initial introduction of the Kennedy speech and the desert backdrop, which were reportedly central to Cadillac F1’s strategy.

Details of the Lawsuit

In his complaint, Bay asserts that an advertising agency informed him that Cadillac F1 intended to pursue a “different direction” with the ad. As a result, he claims that many elements used in the final product originated from his original concepts. According to the lawsuit, Bay is pursuing damages on multiple grounds, including:

  • Breach of verbal contract
  • Breach of implied-in-fact contract
  • Fraud

Bay is seeking $1.5 million in director’s and producer’s fees, along with additional punitive damages.

Cadillac F1’s Response

Dan Towriss, the leader of Cadillac F1, addressed the situation shortly after the ad aired. He expressed disappointment over Bay’s decision to file a lawsuit and emphasized that the team had established a creative vision before discussing a potential role for Bay. “We respect Michael [Bay] and believed we could discuss a directorial role rather than appropriating his creative ideas,” Towriss stated. He maintained confidence that the matter would be resolved amicably, highlighting the success of the ad campaign as a point of pride for the team.

Looking Forward

The unfolding dispute could have significant financial implications for Cadillac F1. As the legal proceedings develop, the focus will remain on how both parties can reach a satisfactory resolution.
