Commonwealth Seeks Meeting with Roblox Over Child Grooming Allegations

Roblox faces scrutiny from the Australian government following concerns over child safety on its platform. Reports indicate that children may be exposed to inappropriate content and predators using the platform for grooming. The federal government’s Communications Minister, Anika Wells, expressed deep concerns from parents about the effectiveness of Roblox’s existing safety measures.

Urgent Government Meeting with Roblox

Communications Minister Anika Wells has formally requested a meeting with Roblox to discuss significant child grooming allegations. In her letter, she outlined that despite previous commitments to improve safety measures, concerning incidents continue to arise.

Safety Measures and Past Commitments

  • Roblox is not subject to the under-16s social media ban in Australia.
  • Last year, Roblox made nine commitments to enhance safety in consultation with the eSafety Commission.
  • Among these commitments were steps to ensure user accounts for children under 16 are private by default.

Ongoing Concerns About Child Safety

Minister Wells highlighted two alarming reports indicating that predators may use Roblox to groom minors and that children are encountering graphic user-generated content. Such content includes sexually explicit themes and material related to self-harm.

Regulatory Actions

In response to these issues, the eSafety Commissioner has also reached out to Roblox. They plan to evaluate how effectively the company has implemented its safety commitments. Furthermore, the Classification Board is reviewing whether Roblox’s current PG rating remains suitable.

Roblox’s Market Presence

Roblox is a widely popular online gaming platform. With around 111 million daily users globally, approximately 40% are under the age of 13. Australia represents Roblox’s second-largest market, following the United States.

Current Safety Protocols

Roblox’s safety initiatives include:

  • Defaulting user accounts for individuals under 16 to private settings.
  • Restricting adult users’ ability to communicate with under-16s without parental consent.
  • Temporarily disabling chat functions for children until age estimation is completed.

Roblox indicated it aims to confirm these measures are fully implemented by the end of 2025. They also plan to verify the age of users seeking access to specific games.

Compliance and Future Oversight

The eSafety Commissioner, Julie Inman Grant, mentioned that ongoing reports of child exploitation on Roblox are alarming. Further compliance tests will assess Roblox’s adherence to the new Online Safety Act, which may implement penalties for non-compliance, potentially reaching $49.5 million. These efforts emphasize the crucial need for platforms to maintain a digital duty of care, particularly concerning child user safety.

Guidelines for Parents

In the wake of these concerns, parents are encouraged to actively engage in their children’s online experiences. Recommendations include:

  • Maintaining open communication regarding online interactions.
  • Monitoring and adjusting privacy settings on apps.
  • Discussing the importance of safeguarding personal information.

As the situation develops, it will be critical for both parents and Roblox to prioritize the safety and well-being of young users in this evolving digital landscape.
