Suzuki Unveils New SUV Rivaling Toyota RAV4 in Performance

Suzuki is set to challenge the competition with its newly unveiled SUV, the Across, designed to rival the popular Toyota RAV4.

Suzuki Across: A RAV4 Rival with Impressive Specifications

Revealed in Europe, the new Across borrows its platform and technology from the Toyota RAV4, boasting a robust performance that includes a 300 hp plug-in hybrid engine. This model continues Suzuki’s tradition of borrowing design elements from Toyota while maintaining a rugged exterior.

Key Features and Design

  • Engine: 2.5-liter gasoline engine with dual electric motors
  • Total Power: 300 hp (224 kW / 304 PS)
  • Transmission: E-CVT gearbox with an E-Four all-wheel-drive system
  • Acceleration: 0-100 km/h (62 mph) in 6.1 seconds
  • Dimensions: 4,600 mm (181.1 inches) in length
  • Wheels: 18-inch dark gray finish

The new Suzuki Across features a rugged Adventure styling, which is virtually identical to the Toyota RAV4 Adventure, known as the Woodland Edition in the US. This resemblance is designed to appeal to outdoor enthusiasts, and the SUV is compatible with all Toyota accessories.

Interior and Technology

Inside, the Across provides a familiar layout dominated by Toyota’s design ethos. Key interior features include:

  • 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster
  • 12.9-inch infotainment screen
  • Head-up display
  • Wireless phone charging
  • Five USB-C ports
  • Advanced driver assistance systems

Powertrain and Performance

The Across is exclusively offered with a plug-in hybrid powertrain. Notably, Suzuki has opted against providing a self-charging hybrid variant, similar to the RAV4’s offering. The plug-in hybrid system is designed for efficiency and offers multiple driving modes, including Normal, Eco, Sport, and E-Four Trail.

While Suzuki has yet to disclose the WLTP range, Toyota’s RAV4 PHEV is known to deliver up to 100 km (62 miles) between charges, thanks to its 22.7 kWh battery. This places the Across in a competitive position within the plug-in hybrid market.

Market Introduction and Competition

The new Suzuki Across made its debut in the Netherlands and is expected to launch across several European countries later this year. Specific pricing details have not yet been revealed.

Once available, the Across will compete with several brands in the segment, including:

  • Honda CR-V
  • Subaru Forester
  • Mitsubishi Outlander
  • Nissan X-Trail
  • Peugeot 5008
  • Skoda Kodiaq
  • Volkswagen Tayron

Interestingly, Suzuki is also launching a different version of the Across in the Seychelles, which is a rebadged Maruti Suzuki Victoris. This model is smaller and unrelated to the European variant, highlighting Suzuki’s diverse approach to regional markets.
