Blue Peter Presenter Dies at 28: Tributes Honor Former Child Star

Michael Sundin, a former presenter of the beloved children’s television show Blue Peter, tragically passed away at the age of 28 in 1989. His contributions to the show and the entertainment industry have been honored three decades after his death.

Early Talent and Blue Peter Career

At just 12 years old, Sundin showcased his exceptional talent as a trampolining champion, which paved his way into show business. He starred in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s acclaimed musical Cats before landing his role as Tik-Tok in Disney’s Return to Oz.

In 1984, Sundin joined Blue Peter, quickly becoming known for his adventurous spirit. His natural charisma caught the attention of producers during an interview with the show’s presenter at the time, Janet Ellis. He joined alongside Simon Groom and took over from Peter Duncan.

Controversial Departure

Despite his promising start, Sundin’s tenure on Blue Peter was brief; he left the show less than a year later. Official reports suggested his departure was due to lack of viewer appeal, while others alleged it was related to Sundin’s sexuality, which was publicly outed during his time on the series.

Legacy as Tik-Tok and Beyond

After Blue Peter, Sundin continued acting and appeared in the film Lionheart in 1987. He also participated in touring productions like Seven Brides for Seven Brothers and Starlight Express. Sundin made an appearance in Rick Astley’s 1988 music video for “She Wants To Dance With Me.” Unfortunately, he fell ill later that year.

His passing at Newcastle General Hospital was initially reported as liver cancer, but it was later revealed that he died from an AIDS-related illness.

Tributes and Remembrance

In recent years, The Elstree Project celebrated Sundin’s performance as Tik-Tok. They highlighted his unique contributions to the character, noting that Sundin operated the movements of Tik-Tok under challenging conditions. His physical performance brought the character to life, showcasing extraordinary skill.

Walter Murch, the program’s oral history director, pointed out that Sundin’s death received limited acknowledgment on air, and he was initially missing from many retrospective montages. However, efforts have been made to recognize his significant impact on the program and the film industry.
