Nissan’s Design Chief Urges Embrace of Heritage

Nissan is set to emphasize its Japanese heritage in future car designs, according to Giovanny Arroba, the new Design Chief for Nissan Europe. He took on this role in Paddington, London, last year. With a background in design centers across the US and Japan, Arroba understands the balance between global influence and regional representation.

Nissan’s Design Philosophy

In an interview with the Autocar Meets podcast, Arroba discussed how vital it is to integrate Nissan’s heritage into its designs. He acknowledged Europe as a significant market that requires dedicated focus. Arroba stated, “Europe is a very distinct region. It’s a very important region.”

Global Design Influence

Nissan operates multiple design studios worldwide, allowing for a broad exchange of ideas. Arroba mentioned the importance of collaboration through design competitions. “Even if they’re regional, we pull together,” he noted, emphasizing how diverse perspectives enhance design quality.

Embracing Japanese Roots

Managing Nissan’s extensive global lineup entails revisiting its origins. Arroba highlighted the new Nissan Micra EV, inspired by the classic ‘Pike cars’ of Japan, as a prime example of this approach. “We’re a Japanese company, but we’re actually quite international,” he remarked.

Celebrating Japanese Design Elements

Arroba believes it’s an opportune time to celebrate Nissan’s identity as a Japanese car manufacturer. He contrasted various design traditions, saying, “The Germans have their Bauhaus, the Italians have their romance.” According to him, Japanese design offers unique charm, wit, and technological innovation, making it both challenging and thrilling for designers.

Through these initiatives, Nissan aims to skillfully blend its heritage with modern demands, paving the way for future innovation.
