Since mid-January, the eastern United States has been gripped by an intense cold wave. The Northeast is experiencing temperatures as much as 30 degrees below average. This Arctic blast led to record lows in various locations, significantly impacting day-to-day life.
Northeast Records Break as Cold Temperatures Persist
On Saturday, New York City recorded a low of 6 degrees at Kennedy Airport. This broke the previous record of 7 degrees, set in 1993. Similarly, DuBois, Pennsylvania, experienced a record low of minus 3 degrees on the same day.
The bitter cold reached extreme levels in northern New York, especially in Watertown. There, temperatures plunged to minus 34 degrees, the lowest in the country, just five miles from Lake Ontario.

Meteorologist Andrew Orrison explained that these extreme conditions resulted from repeated surges of Arctic air. Cities like Washington, D.C., were expected to see a high of only 24 degrees, while New York City would hover around 20 degrees.
Impact of Snow and Wind Chill
The Northeast is also contending with heavy snow accumulations from recent winter storms. This extensive snowpack reflects sunlight, preventing the absorption of warmth by the ground and the air above, which further drives down temperatures.
Wind chill has been a significant concern as well. On Saturday, wind gusts reached 50 miles per hour in New England. This resulted in wind chill values plummeting to minus 30 degrees, with New York City experiencing wind chills between minus 15 and minus 20 degrees.
Health Warnings
Extreme cold warnings have extended across the region, especially in New York City, where wind chills could drop to minus 30 degrees. Medical professionals, including Dr. Robert Glatter of New York City, urged caution when venturing outdoors. When wind chills fall below zero, exposed skin is susceptible to frostbite within minutes.

Despite the current conditions, relief is on the horizon. Meteorologists anticipate a gradual improvement in temperatures as the week progresses. Orrison noted that the extreme cold is likely to peak soon, leading to a moderation in temperatures.
In Watertown, Mayor Sarah Compo Pierce reassured residents about coping with the severe weather. She stated that such conditions were familiar to them. While the cold may be uncomfortable, it’s something that the community is used to handling.
