Stephen Gogolev, a promising figure in figure skating from Canada, has made an impressive debut at the Olympics. Competing in the men’s short program at the Milano Cortina team event, he secured a third-place finish, showcasing his remarkable talent after facing numerous challenges in recent years.

The 21-year-old athlete, dressed in a suit and tie, performed to “Mugzy’s Move” by the American swing band Royal Crown Revue. He landed two stunning quadruple jumps, finishing behind Japan’s Yuma Kagiyama and Ilia Malinin from the U.S.

Gogolev’s Olympic appearance has been a long time coming. Injuries and a significant growth spurt once led him to reconsider his skating career. “There were definitely hard times in the past few seasons where I’d get constantly injured,” he said. Born in Toronto to athletic parents, Gogolev skated in Russia before returning to Canada. He became a child prodigy, being the first Canadian to successfully land three quadruple jumps at just 13 years old. His record-breaking feats as a junior included became the youngest winner of the Junior Grand Prix Final.

With his team currently in fourth place in the overall competition, Gogolev emphasizes personal performance over medals. “I’m focusing on what I can do in the moment,” he explained. His aim is to contribute to Canada’s ranking as they continue in the team event.
