Zelensky: US Pushes for Ukraine-Russia Peace Deal by June, Despite Stalemate

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has stated that the United States is aiming for a peace agreement between Ukraine and Russia by early summer. He made this announcement despite ongoing challenges in the negotiations regarding territorial and security issues.

US Push for Ukraine-Russia Peace Deal by June

Zelensky emphasized that the US administration seeks to conclude a resolution by June, suggesting a “clear schedule of events.” He noted that the US proposed a meeting involving Ukrainian and Russian negotiators in Miami within a week. Ukraine has confirmed its participation in this dialogue.

Current Territorial Stalemate

In response to the Kremlin’s demand for Ukraine to relinquish control over parts of the Donbas region, Zelensky made it clear that such a concession is unacceptable. “We stand where we stand,” he asserted, indicating that the current front lines could serve as a basis for a ceasefire.

Security Guarantees and Energy Attacks

  • Zelensky highlighted the crucial role of security guarantees in ending the conflict. “There can be no end to the war without security guarantees,” he stated.
  • He warned against any agreements made without Ukraine’s involvement, ensuring that Ukraine will not support discussions about its fate that occur without its consent.

Zelensky’s comments coincided with significant Russian strikes targeting Ukraine’s energy infrastructure. The recent attacks involved over 400 drones and approximately 40 missiles, hitting critical power facilities across several regions, including Lviv and Rivne.

Impact of Attacks on Ukraine’s Energy Grid

The strikes have inflicted major damage, leading to widespread power outages throughout the nation. Over 600,000 subscribers in the Lviv region were without electricity as of Saturday morning. The energy crisis has led nuclear plants in Ukraine to cut their output, as indicated by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

Attacks on Power Facilities Frequency
Attacks on DTEK Thermal Power Plants 10 since October
Overall Attacks on DTEK 220 since the full-scale invasion started

Ukrainian Energy Minister Denys Shmyhal noted that emergency blackouts had been implemented across the country. “Energy workers are ready to begin restoration as soon as the security situation allows,” he stated.

Call for Military Support

Zelensky urged for more military assistance to enhance Ukraine’s air defense capabilities. “Every shipment helps us get through this winter,” he emphasized. He called for systems like Patriot and NASAMS to counteract Russia’s ongoing aggression.

The persistent attacks and deteriorating energy situation underline the urgent need for effective diplomacy and action. As Zelensky pointed out, “Every day, Russia could choose real diplomacy, but it chooses new strikes.”
