Veteran Actor Sunil Thapa Passes Away at 58
Sunil Thapa, a veteran actor in Nepali cinema, has passed away at the age of 68. He died on a Friday morning at Norvic Hospital in Thapathali, Kathmandu. His health had deteriorated rapidly, and he was found unconscious upon arrival. An ECG confirmed his death, attributed likely to cardiac arrest.
Legacy in Nepali Cinema
Thapa was a distinguished figure in the Nepali film industry, with a career spanning several decades. He acted in over 300 Nepali films, gaining fame for his memorable role as the antagonist in the movie Chino, where he portrayed ‘Rate Kaila’. This performance cemented his status as a key player in Nepali cinema.
Career Beginnings
Thapa’s journey began in the mid-1970s when he started as a model in Mumbai. He collaborated with prominent fabric brands before transitioning to film. Additionally, he was an accomplished football player, representing multiple clubs in Bombay. He also worked as a photojournalist for JS Magazine, where he covered significant events.

Besides his contributions to Nepali films, Thapa made a notable impact in Indian cinema. He received wider recognition for his supporting role in the film Mary Kom, which earned him a nomination at the Filmfare Awards. His Bollywood debut was in Ek Duuje Ke Liye, and he participated in various productions across Hindi, Tamil, and Bhojpuri films.
