Despite her health setback, Callard is committed to her acting career. She will join the cast of the Irish soap opera Fair City, taking on the role of Lily, the long-lost mother of Gwen Connolly. This transition follows her impressive tenure on Coronation Street, where she acted from 1989 to 2020.

Callard revealed that she received the diagnosis just before starting her new role in Fair City. On RTE’s Late Late Show, she recounted her experience of receiving the news. Just moments before her stage performance, she learned she would have to return to the UK for further tests. She is set to undergo an operation and some radiotherapy, but plans to return to Fair City shortly after. Callard stated:
“I’m fine, I’m absolutely fine… It’s early stages, and I’m along with thousands of other women as well.”
