DC-Area Athletes Compete in Winter Olympics
As the Winter Olympics approach, athletes from the D.C. area are set to represent Team USA in a range of disciplines. The opening ceremony is scheduled for February, with the Games running until February 22. Following these events, the Winter Paralympics will take place from March 6 to March 15 in Italy.
Competing Athletes from the D.C. Region
This year, several notable athletes from the District of Columbia, Maryland, and Virginia will showcase their skills on the international stage. Below is a list of selected athletes participating in various sports:

Ilia Malinin – Figure Skating
Ilia Malinin, a 21-year-old figure skater known as the “Quad God,” hails from Fairfax, Virginia. Previously overlooked for the 2022 Beijing Olympics, he has since risen to prominence and is expected to lead the men’s figure skating team. He is currently a student at George Mason University.

Carsten Vissering – Bobsled
Originally from Bethesda, Maryland, Carsten Vissering began his career in swimming before transitioning to bobsledding at 25. He finished fourth at a recent World Cup event and was very recently selected for his first U.S. Olympic team.

Bryan Sosoo – Bobsled
Bryan Sosoo, a 29-year-old from Laurel, Maryland, has a background in track and field. After a brief international career representing Ghana, he joined Team USA’s bobsled team in 2024 and made his Olympic debut this season.

Mystique Ro – Skeleton
The 31-year-old Mystique Ro from Nokesville, Virginia, will compete in skeleton this year. A former track athlete, Ro made history in 2024 by winning an American skeleton race and recently took home silver at the World Championships.

Kamryn Lute – Short Track Speedskating
Kamryn Lute started her speedskating journey in Northern Virginia at the age of 10. The University of Utah student has overcome health challenges to earn a spot on the U.S. Olympic team.

Conor McDermott-Mostowy – Long Track Speedskating
At 26, Conor McDermott-Mostowy will compete in long track speedskating after securing first place at the Olympic Trials. He is notable for being open about his identity as a gay athlete.

Brandon Kim – Short Track Speedskating
Brandon Kim, a 24-year-old from Fairfax, Virginia, is making his Olympic debut in short track speedskating after breaking a national record earlier this year. He continues to represent his community with pride.

Evan Nichols – Sled Hockey
Evan Nichols is returning to the Paralympic stage at only 21 years old, having already earned a gold medal in the previous Games. He developed his sled hockey skills in Washington, D.C.

Noah Grove – Sled Hockey
Noah Grove, a Frederick, Maryland native, is aiming for his third gold medal in sled hockey after competing in two previous Games. He trained with the Bennett Blazers program in Baltimore.
