Ottawa’s light rail transit faces significant operational challenges, with a substantial number of vehicles still out of service. Despite recent updates from OC Transpo, commuters continue to feel the impact of these disruptions.

Current Status of Ottawa’s Light Rail Transit

As of February 6, OC Transpo reported that only 20 of the vehicles are operational, an increase of two from the previous week. However, a staggering 61 trains remain unavailable.

Projected Availability

Transit officials anticipate that an additional 20 trains might be ready for service by February 13. Even with these additions, the available fleet falls short of the 26 vehicles needed during peak hours on Line 1.

Service Challenges and Response

OC Transpo acknowledged that the current service levels are inadequate. They expressed commitment to restoring capacity while ensuring accountability from their maintenance provider.

  • Morning and afternoon train frequencies are currently between three to four minutes.
  • Staff support at key stations, including Bayview and uOttawa, is in place to assist commuters.

Despite these efforts, crowding remains a problem during busy periods, highlighting ongoing challenges in managing the transit system.

Technical Issues and Repair Timeline

The crisis originated when Rideau Transit Group identified problems with the cartridge bearing assemblies on January 21. This discovery led to the withdrawal of several trains from service.

  • Spalling has been detected on various mechanisms, causing flakes to chip off the metal inside the axle.
  • This condition may result in cracks and lead to bearing failures if not addressed promptly.

OC Transpo is keeping track of the out-of-service vehicles while Rideau Transit Group investigates the root cause of these mechanical failures. All affected vehicles are expected to remain off the rails until the necessary replacements are completed.
