Jim Schwartz Departs as Browns Defensive Coordinator for 2026 Season

Jim Schwartz has officially departed his role as the Browns’ Defensive Coordinator as the team heads into the 2026 season. Despite efforts to retain him, Schwartz will not be part of the staff under newly appointed head coach Todd Monken.

Efforts to Retain Schwartz

Reports from Rapoport, Pelissero, and Garafolo revealed that the Browns made attempts to persuade Schwartz to stay with Monken’s coaching team. However, he remains under contract and, therefore, not eligible to pursue other Defensive Coordinator positions.

Monken’s Comments on Schwartz

During his introductory news conference, Monken expressed his admiration for Schwartz. He stated, “I think Jim is an outstanding defensive coordinator. But I think it’s a little inappropriate for me to comment about that at this time.”

Schwartz’s Defensive Record with the Browns

Throughout his three seasons with the Browns, Schwartz led the defense to rank in the top four for yards allowed on two occasions. This defense was a shining highlight amid a challenging 2025 campaign for the team.

  • Myles Garrett set the franchise record for single-season sacks.
  • Garrett also earned the title of Defensive Player of the Year.
  • Linebacker Carson Schwesinger was named Defensive Rookie of the Year at the NFL Honors.

Monken’s Vision for the Defense

Monken acknowledged the appeal of the Browns position partly due to the strong talent on the defensive side. He indicated that he intends to maintain the current defensive system: “My anticipation is we’re not going to change the system. Very difficult to go against.”

Potential Candidates for Defensive Coordinator

With Schwartz’s departure, the Browns face a crucial decision in selecting a new Defensive Coordinator. The team is reportedly considering assistants from the Texans, particularly those under former Schwartz pupil Matt Burke.

  • Dino Vasso, Houston’s defensive backs coach
  • Cory Undlin, defensive passing game coordinator

The Browns will need to act swiftly to fill this vital position to continue their defensive prowess into the upcoming season.
