Neophytos Stavrou Embraces a Medal-Free, Humble Lifestyle

Neophytos Stavrou, a prominent figure in the Australian Cypriot community, embodies a lifestyle focused on humility and service without seeking medals or accolades. As a finalist for the inaugural Australia Cyprus Achievement Awards, Stavrou reflects on a life dedicated to faith, perseverance, and community involvement.

Early Life and Migration

Born on January 21 in Xylotymbou, Cyprus, Stavrou is the third of five children in a devout family. His parents, Stavros and Ekaterina, influenced his values significantly. At the age of seven, he moved in with his aunt and uncle, who instilled in him a strong work ethic and the significance of faith. Early on, he was deeply involved in church activities, studying Byzantine chant and immersing himself in religious teachings.

In 1951, at the age of 21, Stavrou migrated to Australia, carrying little more than determination. The Cypriot community played a crucial role in his adjustment, guiding him toward employment and support. He began working in various jobs, including a milk bar and a kitchen hand role, eventually settling into a position at the IXL factory.

Building a Business

Stavrou sought to support Cyprus economically, starting with a café in Taylor Square, Darlinghurst. The business relied on the local Greek and Cypriot clientele, but its closure required a pivot to the wine industry. In the early 1960s, he began importing Cypriot and Greek wines and established a liquor license.

Through dedication, he traveled across Australia to create wholesale networks. He introduced unique wines, such as Cyprus Commandaria, believing in their potential. Significant sacrifices, including selling his home, underscored his commitment to building his business.

Philanthropy and Legacy

Despite his success, Stavrou has consistently shunned public recognition. His philanthropic efforts span churches, schools, and various charitable organizations. “I don’t need medals,” he states, emphasizing the importance of honoring those who have sacrificed for their country.

The tragic loss of his nephew during the Turkish invasion of Cyprus in 1974 deeply affected him. This personal tragedy underscored his commitment to his community and the values instilled in him from an early age.
