Harry Melling Discusses ‘Pillion,’ Character Acting, and Career Insights
Harry Melling is carving out a remarkable career as a character actor at the age of 36. He gained prominence through his role as Dudley Dursley in the “Harry Potter” film series. Melling’s early challenges included adapting to his physical transformation during his studies at LAMDA, where he had to wear a fat suit for the last two films.
His standout performance came in the Coen brothers’ film “The Ballad of Buster Scruggs,” where he played a tragic character. This role not only showcased his acting prowess but also served as a pivotal moment in his career. Melling recalled, “Getting validation from Joel and Ethan was a huge moment for me as an actor.” This experience led him to seek collaborations with creative personalities who appreciated unique storytelling.
New Venture: ‘Pillion’
Currently, Melling stars in the BAFTA contender “Pillion,” directed by Harry Lighton. In this BDSM relationship comedy, he plays Colin, with Alexander Skarsgård portraying the domineering biker Ray. Melling explained that his character navigates new experiences, leading to comedic moments as Colin tries to understand Ray’s expectations. “It’s all new and it’s all ahead of him,” Melling noted.
Colin’s supportive family background adds depth to the narrative. Melling emphasized the importance of balancing the film’s more shocking moments with these warm family dynamics. He stated, “The tone of it is always moving between those two spaces.” Throughout the story, Colin embarks on a personal journey of self-discovery within the BDSM realm.
Collaborating with Alexander Skarsgård
Melling expressed confidence in working with Skarsgård, remarking that the dynamic between their characters is foundational to the film. Their first interaction was a wrestling scene, described as the “Mexican Surfboard Move.” This approach helped them bond and understand their roles better. Melling remarked, “It was a lovely way of getting to know the world and the characters.”
Much like successful intimate films such as “Fifty Shades of Grey,” “Pillion” aims to blend emotional connections with the sexuality between characters. Melling believes that the audience is drawn to the relationship dynamics, not just the explicit content. “They’re interested in the development of the characters,” he said.
Character Acting as a Career Choice
Harry Melling has always aspired to be a character actor, emphasizing the nuances of human behavior in storytelling. He explained, “The most interesting characters are fighting for something or are sensitive.” His experience in significant roles, such as portraying Edgar Allan Poe in “The Pale Blue Eye,” further solidified his commitment to this path.
In the acclaimed series “Queen’s Gambit,” Melling found success opposite Anya Taylor-Joy. He credited the series’ unexpected popularity, especially during the pandemic, for its resonance with viewers. His previously portrayed role in “Wolf Hall” reinforced the importance of being present in the character’s narrative.
Upcoming Projects
Melling is set to star in the gothic horror musical “Stuffed,” directed by Theo Rhys, which features Jodie Comer. He described this project as a significant challenge, expressing confidence in his singing abilities. With A24 releasing “Pillion” on February 6, Melling continues to explore diverse and compelling roles in his evolving career.
