A46 Roadworks to Ease Traffic at Coventry’s Notorious Bottleneck Junction
A significant upgrade project has been approved to alleviate congestion at Coventry’s problematic Walsgrave junction on the A46. This initiative aims to enhance traffic flow and improve connectivity for drivers in the region.
A46 Walsgrave Junction Upgrade Overview
The upgrade, costing £112 million, is slated to begin construction in autumn 2026. Completion and reopening for traffic are expected by 2028. The project has received approval via a Development Consent Order (DCO) from Lord Hendy, representing Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander.
Importance of the A46 Route
The A46 is a crucial trade corridor in the UK, linking the M5 and Humber Ports. It serves millions, supports countless jobs, and connects manufacturing and distribution centers with major ports. Each day, the route accommodates approximately 57,000 drivers.
- The A46 facilitates a third of all traffic in the UK.
- It carries two-thirds of the nation’s freight.
- It connects the South West, Midlands, and North regions.
Impact on Local Economy
Emma Winter, Project Manager at National Highways, emphasized that this upgrade is vital for improving the movement of goods. By removing existing bottlenecks, better access to job centers can be achieved, fostering local economic growth. Well-connected areas are more attractive to businesses, enhancing innovation and job opportunities.
Support from Industry Leaders
James Barwise, Policy Lead for the Road Haulage Association (RHA), expressed support for the Walsgrave junction upgrade. He noted its significance for road transport, stating that improved infrastructure is essential for smooth transport operations across the Midlands.
Project Significance and Next Steps
The Walsgrave junction upgrade is classified as a Nationally Significant Infrastructure Project under the Planning Act 2008. This classification necessitated obtaining planning permission through a DCO.
Now, interested parties have a six-week window to challenge the decision legally. The successful completion of this project is expected to greatly enhance traffic flow and economic activity in Coventry and surrounding areas.
