Lincolnshire Begins Food Waste Collections: Caddies Delivery Details Revealed
Lincolnshire is set to implement a new food waste collection program, starting this week for some residents. This initiative aims to reduce the amount of food waste sent to landfills and improve recycling efforts across the region.
Delivery Details of Food Waste Caddies
Residents will receive two types of food waste caddies: a five-litre indoor caddy and a 23-litre outdoor caddy. Each household will also receive 52 bin liners for the indoor caddy, ensuring cleanliness during usage.
Collection Schedule
The rollout of these caddies will occur at different times across various districts in Lincolnshire:
- Lincoln: Caddies will be delivered starting February 23. Collections commence on March 30.
- West Lindsey: Caddies began distribution on February 2, with collections set for late March.
- North Kesteven: Delivery of caddies has begun, with the first collection on March 30.
- South Kesteven: Caddy deliveries start February 2, and collections will begin the week of April 13.
- East Lindsey, Boston, and South Holland: Collections are planned for autumn 2026, with caddies delivered in advance.
What Can Be Collected?
Residents are encouraged to recycle various types of food waste, including:
- Uneaten food and plate scrapings
- Meat and fish, whether raw or cooked
- Dairy products
- Tea bags and coffee grounds
- Rice, pasta, and beans
- Bread, pastries, and cakes
- Raw or cooked fruits and vegetables, including peelings
Environmental Benefits
This initiative has been praised as an effective way to prevent drainage issues in collaboration with Anglian Water. Conducting separate collections of food waste is expected to significantly reduce landfill contributions, which currently account for around 26% of rubbish in Lincolnshire.
The collected food waste will be processed at local anaerobic digestion facilities, where it can be transformed into nutrient-rich fertilizer and renewable energy. This service is free for residents, and while participation is encouraged, it is not mandatory.
The smaller outdoor caddies are designed for easy transport to the curbside on designated collection days, providing a convenient solution for managing food waste.
