Red Sox Secure Kyle Keller with Minor League Contract
The Boston Red Sox have signed reliever Kyle Keller to a minor league contract, which includes an invitation to Spring Training. This agreement was reported by Will Sammon of The Athletic. If Keller makes the MLB roster, he will earn a base salary of $1.9 million.
Details of the Contract
This deal features multiple assignment clauses. The first clause takes effect mid-April, requiring the Red Sox to make Keller available to other teams if they have not yet promoted him to the major leagues. Should another team express interest in adding him to their MLB roster, Boston will either need to elevate him or release him.
Keller’s Background
Keller brings experience from four seasons in Japan, where he played for the Hanshin Tigers and the Yomiuri Giants. Standing at 6’4″, he recorded a 2.42 ERA over 152 1/3 innings in Japan. His most recent statistics show a 3.11 ERA in 46 1/3 innings, with a 26.3% strikeout rate, although he also faced challenges with a near 12% walk rate.
MLB Experience
Before his time in Japan, Keller had stints in Major League Baseball with the Miami Marlins, Los Angeles Angels, and Pittsburgh Pirates from 2019 to 2021. During this period, he posted a 5.83 ERA over 46 1/3 innings.
Competitive Outlook
Chief baseball officer Craig Breslow has been active in building depth in the bullpen. Keller is among several non-roster relief options competing for a spot in the upcoming season. Other players signed include:
- Vinny Nittoli
- Seth Martinez
- Devin Sweet
- Tayron Guerrero
- Hobie Harris
Keller’s robust contract and prior MLB experience provide a promising outlook as he seeks to secure a spot on the Red Sox roster.
