Authorities reported that an 18-year-old student was found dead on the morning of Saturday, following a fraternity rush event at Northern Arizona University (NAU) the night before. The Flagstaff Police Department responded to a residence near the campus at approximately 8:45 a.m., where bystanders were performing CPR on the student. Despite their efforts and subsequent assistance from paramedics, the student was declared dead at the scene.

Details Surrounding the Incident

Preliminary investigations suggest that the deceased was a pledge candidate of the Delta Tau Delta fraternity. The investigation points to multiple attendees consuming alcohol during the rush event held on Friday night.

Charges Filed Against Fraternity Members

Three fraternity members, all serving in leadership roles, have been charged with hazing connected to the student’s death. The individuals charged include:

  • Carter Eslick, 20, New Member Educator
  • Ryan Creech, 20, Vice President
  • Riley Cass, 20, Treasurer

These students, who are all members of the executive board, were detained at the Coconino County Detention Facility after the incident. Police have not disclosed the identity of the student who passed away.

University and Fraternity Responses

Northern Arizona University has suspended the Delta Tau Delta fraternity pending its own investigation into the events leading to the student’s death. In a statement, the university expressed sorrow over the tragedy and reinforced its commitment to student safety.

The university stated, “Violence, hazing, or any other behavior that endangers others has no place at NAU.” They highlighted their existing programs aimed at hazing prevention and maintaining high standards for student conduct.

In response, Delta Tau Delta International released a statement emphasizing their opposition to hazing, asserting that it contradicts the fraternity’s values. They confirmed their ongoing investigation and called for member cooperation with law enforcement.

Investigation Status

Detectives are conducting further inquiries into the circumstances surrounding the student’s death. They plan to work alongside the Coconino County Medical Examiner’s Office to establish the cause of death. The police encourage anyone with relevant information to come forward to assist in the investigation.
