Schools across eastern and central Newfoundland have been closed due to substantial snow and powerful winds. The province is facing snow accumulations forecasted to range from 30 to 50 centimeters. Wind gusts are expected to exceed 100 kilometers per hour.

The capital city, St. John’s, is effectively paralyzed. Public buses have been pulled from roads, and municipal buildings are closed. All court activities, including provincial, supreme, family, and appeals courts, are canceled for the day.

Environment Canada has issued an orange snowfall warning for the area. According to Veronica Sullivan, a meteorologist from the Gander Weather Office, approximately seven centimeters of snow was measured in St. John’s by 6:30 a.m.
