Giants’ John Harbaugh Pursues Ex-NFL Head Coaches for Offensive Coordinator Role

Giants’ John Harbaugh Pursues Ex-NFL Head Coaches for Offensive Coordinator Role

New York Giants head coach John Harbaugh is actively working on assembling his coaching staff. A significant focus of his efforts is the hiring of an offensive coordinator, a crucial position that still needs to be filled. Among potential candidates, former NFL head coaches Brian Callahan and Kliff Kingsbury have emerged as key targets for Harbaugh.

Candidates for Offensive Coordinator Role

According to reports from ESPN, Harbaugh has either interviewed or plans to interview both Callahan and Kingsbury. Let’s examine their backgrounds:

  • Brian Callahan – Recently fired as the head coach of the Tennessee Titans, Callahan finished the season with a 4-19 record. Prior to his stint in Tennessee, he was responsible for the Bengals’ offensive strategy from 2019 to 2023.
  • Kliff Kingsbury – Most recently served as the offensive coordinator for the Washington Commanders from 2024 to 2025. Kingsbury was previously the head coach of the Arizona Cardinals from 2019 to 2022.

Other Coaching Candidates

In addition to Callahan and Kingsbury, Harbaugh has also expressed interest in several other candidates:

  • Shane Day (Chargers quarterbacks coach)
  • Davis Webb (Broncos quarterbacks coach)
  • Jim Bob Cooter (Colts offensive coordinator)
  • Alex Tanney (Colts passing game coordinator)

Current Staffing Updates

While the offensive coordinator position remains vacant, Harbaugh has secured several other coaching roles on the offensive side of the ball. Recently, Chad Hall has been promoted to wide receivers coach after serving as the assistant quarterbacks coach last season.

Additionally, tight ends coach Tim Kelly has been retained, while Mike Groh, the previous receivers coach, was not kept on staff. Willie Taggart has been brought in to coach the running backs, a role he held under Harbaugh during their time in Baltimore.

Key Development Needs

Harbaugh still needs to hire an offensive coordinator, as well as coaches for quarterbacks and the offensive line. Given Harbaugh’s background in special teams, hiring a strong offensive coordinator is essential for his plans to develop quarterback Jaxson Dart in his second year.

As the search continues, the Giants appear poised for a significant transformation in their offensive approach, depending on who Harbaugh ultimately selects for this pivotal role.
