Waterloo Region’s Yellow Cold Alert Extends Through February
Waterloo Region is experiencing a prolonged cold spell as February progresses. Environment Canada has issued a yellow cold alert that extends through this weekend. Residents are urged to prepare for extremely low temperatures and hazardous wind chills.
Current Weather Conditions
On Sunday morning, temperatures are expected to plummet to -10°C, with wind chill making it feel as cold as -25 to -30°C. By the afternoon, the wind chill will still keep temperatures feeling close to -15°C. Although sunshine will be present, it will not mitigate the biting cold.
Health and Safety Precautions
With the risk of frostbite, particularly for exposed skin, it is essential to dress warmly. Here are some recommended precautions:
- Wear multiple layers of clothing.
- Check on older relatives or those living alone.
- Keep pets indoors and monitor their wellbeing.
Watch for signs of extreme cold, which include numbness, color changes, pain, or swelling in fingers and toes.
Upcoming Weather Forecast
Looking ahead, Monday is expected to bring scattered clouds with a chance of light snow later in the day. The anticipated high on Tuesday is -6°C, continuing the trend of chilly weather. However, a return of sunlight and a slight increase in temperature to -8°C is expected on Wednesday.
Significant Snowfall in January
Last month, Waterloo Region experienced significant snowfall. Initial estimates from Environment Canada reported around 80 cm of snow accumulation. This ongoing cold weather and recent weather patterns emphasize the importance of staying informed and prepared.
