Belkin’s Wemo Smart Devices Going Offline Saturday
Belkin is set to take significant steps regarding its Wemo smart home devices. Starting Saturday, nearly all Wemo devices will disconnect from cloud services. This cutoff will eliminate features such as remote access and integrations with popular platforms like Google Home and Amazon Alexa.
Impact on Wemo Devices
The shutdown of cloud services was first disclosed in July. This change affects most Wemo products, which include smart plugs, light switches, and even a coffee maker. However, a small selection of Thread-based devices will remain operational.
Devices Not Affected
- 3-way smart light switch (WLS0503)
- Stage smart scene controller (WSC010)
- Smart plug with Thread (WSP100)
- Smart video doorbell camera (WDC010)
Additionally, Wemo devices configured through Apple’s HomeKit will still function. However, users must complete the setup before the January 31 deadline to maintain this capability.
Continued Use of Devices
Following the shutdown, affected Wemo devices will only operate manually. Users can expect diminished functionality without cloud access. Belkin will cease updates for the Wemo app starting January 31, marking a significant transition for users.
Refund Opportunities
If customers have Wemo devices still under warranty, they may qualify for a partial refund after the services end. This option provides a potential relief for those impacted by the significant changes in cloud connectivity.
