Camping Costs Rise for 59 B.C. Parks; Non-Residents Face Extra Fees
Camping costs in British Columbia are set to rise, particularly for non-residents. BC Parks has announced a new surcharge for visitors from outside the province, amid a broader update to camping fees for the first time since 2016. This change comes in response to increasing visitor numbers and extreme weather events affecting the parks.
New Camping Fees Effective May 15, 2026
Starting May 15, 2026, non-B.C. residents will incur an additional fee of $20 for various camping-related services, including:
- Frontcountry campgrounds
- Backcountry park trips
- Cabin rentals
- Mooring buoys and docks usage
Fee Updates for Popular Parks
BC Parks will implement updated fees across 59 high-demand frontcountry parks and four backcountry parks. These locations include:
- Garibaldi Park
- Golden Ears Park
- Joffre Lakes Park
- Mount Assiniboine Park
For B.C. residents, the new pricing reflects an average increase of 40 cents per night during the shoulder season and around $13.29 during the summer. The average nightly rate will be:
| Season | Average Nightly Rate (B.C. Residents) |
|---|---|
| Shoulder Season | $30.81 |
| Summer | $42.91 |
The four backcountry parks will also see an average increase of $13.62 per night, with fees ranging from $17 to $25 per night, depending on the park. Fees will remain unchanged in 388 other parks across the province.
Reservation Updates
This year, camping reservations can be made up to three months in advance. This adjustment aims to enhance the visitor experience while addressing the demands of increased attendance and the impact of climate-related challenges.
As stated by Minister of Environment and Parks Tamara Davidson, the changes are part of a broader initiative to sustain the parks and provide long-term protection for these vital natural spaces. This focus on stewardship is crucial as British Columbians continue to cherish their outdoor recreational areas.
