Disabled Cargo Ship Near Figueira da Foz Towed to Vigo
A disabled cargo ship, the Eikborg, which lost steering off the coast of Figueira da Foz, is now heading for Vigo, Spain. The vessel is expected to arrive on Friday morning, around 8 to 9 AM, according to the National Maritime Authority.
Eikborg: Key Details
The Eikborg measures 89 meters in length and was constructed in 2008. It belongs to the Dutch shipping company Royal Wagenborg, which was established in the late 19th century. The company operates a fleet of 160 cargo vessels and employs approximately 3,000 people.
Convoy to Vigo
On Tuesday, the ship lost its steering about 22 nautical miles (approximately 40 kilometers) from Portugal’s coastline. Currently, a Norwegian tugboat is towing the Eikborg to Vigo. There was a brief stop in Vigo to acquire better towing cables and necessary materials, which caused minor delays.
