Northeastern Swim and Dive Triumphs Over Stony Brook on Senior Day

The Northeastern swim and dive team achieved a decisive victory over the Stony Brook Seawolves on January 24, winning 178-98 during their Senior Day festivities. This event celebrated the contributions of the senior athletes, who delivered outstanding performances throughout the meet.

Northeastern Swim and Dive Highlights

The day was marked by remarkable achievements, particularly from the senior class. Anelise Kim excelled in diving, achieving first place in both diving events. Other standout performances included:

  • Anna Verlander winning the 50-yard backstroke.
  • Marcela Scaramuzza triumphing in the 50-yard breaststroke.

Diving Performance

The meet commenced with the 3-meter diving event. Anelise Kim led the competition with a score of 257.70, followed by freshman Kailyn Aquino with a score of 228.80. Freshman Tyler Ostrom and sophomore Madeleine Wong also competed, finishing fifth and sixth, respectively.

Swimming Races

The swimming events kicked off with a 400-yard medley relay, where Northeastern secured the top three spots. The A-relay team, featuring:

  • Sophie Bromley
  • Marea Li
  • May Bradburn
  • Alex Campion

won with a time of 3:54.77.

In the next event, the 200-yard freestyle, junior Mary Nordmann claimed first with a personal best of 1:55.99. Freshmen Eliana Auerbach and Abigail Gowern finished second and third, respectively, maintaining Northeastern’s strong lead.

Podium Sweeps

The team continued their success, sweeping the podium in multiple events, including:

  • 50-yard backstroke – Verlander (26.90), Alonso (27.17), Bromley (27.69), Keller (28.70)
  • 50-yard breaststroke – Scaramuzza (31.02), Li (31.05), Bendall (31.10)
  • 50-yard freestyle – Bradburn (24.05), Fuller, and Nordmann (24.14 tie), Blair (24.75)
  • 100-yard freestyle – Fuller (58.79), Campion (54.17), Bradburn (54.74)
  • 200-yard backstroke – Verlander (2:05.99), Bromley (2:07.70), Keller (2:08.46)

Challenges and Achievements

The team’s performance was not without challenges. In the 200-yard butterfly, sophomore Kate Kerber and freshman Ceclia Traub could only secure third and fourth, respectively.

Despite these setbacks, Northeastern secured the top two positions in the 500-yard freestyle, with Gowern (5:15.11) finishing first and junior Bella Busconi closely following in second.

Match Conclusion

Due to their commanding lead, some final events, including the 100-yard individual medley, were not scored. The Huskies displayed their potential, with all competitors performing well despite the scoring restrictions. Following this match, they will compete again on February 6 and 7 at the Boston Winter Open, hosted by Boston University.
