Zelenskyy Seeks Talks with Putin to Resolve Key Disputes, Says Ukraine’s FM

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is prepared to engage in direct discussions with Russian President Vladimir Putin. This intention focuses on resolving two critical disputes: territorial issues and the future governance of the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP).

Zelenskyy Ready for Talks with Putin

Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha highlighted these issues during a recent interview. He emphasized that these are the most pressing matters hindering the peace process between Ukraine and Russia.

    • Territorial disputes
    • Control of the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant

Sybiha’s Statements on Negotiations

Sybiha believes that a face-to-face meeting between Zelenskyy and Putin could pave the way for resolution. He noted, “It is precisely to resolve them that the president is ready to meet Putin and discuss this.”

However, he stated that he does not see a necessity for direct talks with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov. Sybiha remarked, “We should not create parallel efforts. Established negotiating teams already include foreign ministry representatives.” He added that pursuing multiple concurrent discussions would be inappropriate at this stage.

Current State of Peace Discussions

The Ukrainian negotiating teams have engaged in significant talks regarding a ceasefire. Discussions have also included mechanisms for monitoring and verifying any potential truce. Sybiha confirmed that these meetings are essential to advancing peace efforts.

On January 26, Zelenskyy announced that preparations for another meeting of the negotiating teams from Ukraine, the United States, and Russia were underway. This anticipated meeting is set for February 1.

This commitment to dialogue underscores a continued emphasis on diplomacy as a means to address ongoing tensions in the region.
