Beer Store Shutters Four More Ontario Locations, North London Included
In a significant shift within Ontario’s retail landscape, the Beer Store is set to close four locations across the province, including one in North London. The closure at 1727 Richmond St. is scheduled for March 22. This marks part of the ongoing decline in the retailer’s brick-and-mortar presence.
Details of the Upcoming Closures
Alongside the North London outlet, locations in Brampton, Etobicoke, and Hamilton will also shut down on the same date. This consistent reduction of stores follows the Ford government’s decision in 2024 to end the Beer Store’s exclusive retail contract, allowing beer sales at supermarkets, convenience stores, and big-box retailers.
Context of the Closures
The Beer Store had previously been required to maintain at least 300 of its 438 locations until the end of the last year. However, the changing dynamics of Ontario’s alcohol market are prompting the retailer to adjust its operations.
Statements from the Beer Store
Ozzie Ahmed, the vice-president of retail at the Beer Store, discussed these changes in a recent news release. He noted that the company is focused on aligning with consumer needs and continuing to provide an extensive selection of beer. Moreover, he emphasized the importance of a world-class deposit return system.
Impact on London Residents
The closure in North London is particularly notable, as it represents the fourth Beer Store to shut down in the area since 2024. This leaves only six operational locations for customers.
Future Plans for Container Returns
As the number of Beer Store locations decreases, customers may find it more challenging to return empty alcohol containers for deposit refunds. The government has announced plans to expand return options to other retailers in the future. However, the specifics of this plan, including which retailers will participate, remain under development.
Support for Affected Employees
The Beer Store has stated its intention to assist employees impacted by the closures, though details about the number of staff affected at the North London location have not been disclosed.
