Québec Breaks 20-Year Record Amid Polar Freeze

The recent polar freeze in Québec brought a historic chill, breaking a record that stood for over 20 years. This weekend, the maximum temperature in Québec City plummeted to -21.4°C. The previous record for this date was set in 2004 at -20.8°C, according to meteorologist Nicolas Lessard from MétéoMédia.

Record-Breaking Cold in Québec

On Saturday, the wind chill made it feel as cold as -36°C. By Sunday morning, temperatures dipped further to -27°C. The wind chill factor brought it down to an even colder -37°C. Such extreme conditions led to increased demand for electricity, peaking at 40,220 megawatts (MW), as reported by Hydro-Québec.

Lynn St-Laurent, a spokesperson for Hydro-Québec, noted this was the highest demand so far this winter. However, it did not surpass the record set on February 3, 2023, when demand hit an unprecedented 43,124 MW amid temperatures falling to -52°C.

Impact on Local Activities

The severe cold forced the cancellation of evening skiing at Mont-Sainte-Anne and Mont Saint-Bruno. Nevertheless, some skiers took advantage of the conditions at Massif de Charlevoix. Following a recent vote in favor of a new convention, employees returned to work despite the intense cold.

  • Skis were still in demand despite the weather conditions.
  • Many enjoyed the snow conditions, while acknowledging the season’s precarious status just days ago.
  • Weather forecasts predict favorable skiing conditions ahead, with light powder expected to accumulate.

Weather Forecast and Safety Tips

As the week progresses, caution is advised. Environment Canada forecasts 5 to 10 centimeters of new snow on Monday, with wind gusts potentially reaching 50 km/h, which could reduce visibility due to blowing snow. Meteorologist François De Brienne stresses the need for safe driving, especially in these challenging conditions.

MétéoMédia also recommends maintaining safe distances on the roads. Visibility may be severely limited, and icy surfaces will likely be a hazard. Despite the frigid temperatures, a bit of sunshine is anticipated midweek.
