Urgent Recall: Baby Formula Contaminated with Harmful Food Poisoning Toxin
Concerns over contaminated baby formula have led to an urgent recall affecting several batches distributed across the UK and Europe. Danone has initiated this recall following guidance from the Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI) regarding possible cereulide contamination.
Recall Details and Affected Products
The recall focuses on specific infant and follow-on formula products manufactured in Ireland. Notably, these products were not sold in Ireland but have been exported internationally, including to numerous EU nations and the UK.
Contamination Source
The contamination source is linked to ARA oil, an ingredient manufactured in China. This oil was contaminated with cereulide, a toxin resulting from certain strains of the Bacillus cereus bacterium. The presence of cereulide poses significant risks, including severe food poisoning.
Previous Recalls
This recent recall follows a similar incident where some batches of infant formula from Nestle’s SMA product line were also recalled earlier this month due to contaminated raw ingredients.
Regulatory Oversight
The FSAI, alongside the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine, continues to work with Danone to ensure consumer safety. The agency has informed the European Commission about the ongoing situation and is monitoring the recall closely.
Danone’s Response
In a public statement, Danone emphasized its commitment to food safety. They clarified that this targeted recall affects only a limited number of specific batches. The company confirmed that no Danone products sold in Ireland are impacted, allowing consumers to purchase their infant formulas as usual.
Specifics of the Recall
- Product: Aptamil First Infant Milk
- Batch Number/Expiry: 31-10-2026
- Recall Duration: Affected items were on shelves in the UK for about two weeks in July 2025.
This urgent recall highlights the importance of maintaining rigorous food safety standards in the manufacturing and distribution of infant formula. Consumers are encouraged to remain vigilant and check for any affected products during their purchases.
