Restoration of Historic GWR Diesel Railcar W20W Nears Completion

The historic restoration of the GWR Diesel Railcar W20W is nearing completion after decades of dedicated volunteer work. Originally constructed in 1940, W20W is one of only two surviving Great Western Railway Diesel Railcars featuring a rare dual-range design. This unique vehicle is crucial to the heritage railway movement and significant in the history of the Kent & East Sussex Railway (K&ESR).

Generous Support Accelerates Restoration

A new grant from the Colonel Stephens Railway Museum has provided a vital boost to the ongoing restoration efforts. The team at K&ESR has worked tirelessly for over 25 years on this project. Thanks to a £20,000 grant from the Association for Industrial Archaeology (AIA) in 2022, followed by matching funds from the K&ESR Board, the project gained momentum.

Significant Milestones in Restoration

The “20 for 20” Appeal, launched in memory of former K&ESR Director Andrew Webb, has also contributed additional funds for key restoration tasks. Key progress includes:

  • Structural and Weatherproofing: Complete installation of roof panels and full saloon glazing.
  • Cab Reconstruction: Specialised sheet-metal fabricators rebuilt both cabs.
  • Interior Renovation: Complete transformation of saloons and luggage compartments with period-sensitive materials.
  • Safety upgrades: Installation of fireproof and soundproof flooring compliant with safety standards.

Mechanical and Electrical Systems Enhancement

The mechanical systems of W20W have also seen significant advancements. A new diesel-fired hot water heating system replicates the original steam heat layout. Both engines have undergone extensive overhauls, and critical electrical, pneumatic, and vacuum systems are undergoing testing.

Final Stages of Completion

As of Autumn 2025, the project reached the “Practical Completion” stage. Remaining tasks include:

  • Final wiring installations for the cabs.
  • Windscreen installations.
  • Drive-train coupling preparations.

Once these tasks are completed, W20W will transition to the Operations Department for commissioning and assurance before being approved for public service.

A Historic Moment for K&ESR

The successful completion of the W20W restoration will serve as a beacon of GWR heritage. K&ESR Chairman Derrick Bilsby remarked on the significance of this project, emphasizing its importance to both K&ESR and the wider railway preservation community.

He stated, “Restoring W20W is a historic achievement. It champions sustainable practices while celebrating heritage. It connects us to the pioneering innovations that shaped modern railways in Britain.”

The restoration reflects not just a revival of a significant vehicle but also a commitment to preserving the history and innovation of the railway industry. As W20W prepares to return to the rails, it promises to be a historic moment for the K&ESR and its supporters.
