Support Sault Ste. Marie in Acquiring Essential Diagnostic Imaging Upgrades

Group Health Centre is nearing the completion of its vital fundraising campaign aimed at acquiring critical diagnostic imaging upgrades. The fundraiser, targeting $1 million, is now at 95% of its goal. However, organizers are urging the community for one final push to meet the target.

Campaign Details

The fundraising campaign focuses on replacing outdated equipment crucial for diagnostic purposes. Funds raised will specifically go towards a new mammography unit featuring advanced 3D imaging technology and six ultrasound machines.

Current Status

  • Campaign is approximately 95% complete.
  • Initial goal of $1 million was set for March, now extended into April.

Tricia Lesnick, the trust fund manager at Group Health Centre, emphasized the need for modern technology. “The newer models are more aligned with current technology,” she stated, pointing out that existing equipment is reaching the end of its lifespan.

Diagnostic Imaging Statistics

Each year, the diagnostic imaging department performs over 40,000 procedures, which include:

  • 12,000 ultrasounds
  • 6,000 mammograms

These services are accessible to the entire community, not just primary care patients. Individuals eligible for a mammogram can schedule through the Ontario Breast Screening Program without needing a referral. For ultrasounds, a referral from any primary care provider is sufficient.

Importance of Up-to-Date Equipment

Modern equipment not only enhances diagnostic accuracy but also plays a critical role in attracting and retaining healthcare professionals in northern Ontario, an area facing physician shortages. Lesnick noted, “Providers want to work in environments where they have confidence in the tools they’re using.”

By investing in the latest diagnostic tools, Group Health Centre alleviates pressure on local hospitals, allowing them to concentrate on more acute and specialized care. Without these local services, patients risk facing longer wait times and may need to travel outside the community.

Call to Action

The campaign organizers are encouraging community members to contribute, as even small donations can help bridge the remaining gap. Contributions will secure timely and accurate diagnostic imaging services at Group Health Centre.
