Frank Warren Reveals Shooter’s Identity, Says Attacker Isn’t Thriving

Frank Warren has spent more than four decades shaping British boxing. The Hall of Fame promoter spoke to Filmogaz.com about his career, close calls, and reforms he helped fund.

From pubs to promotion

Warren grew up in Islington and ran pubs and clubs as a young man. A dispute over money at an unlicensed fight led him into promotion.

He worked with fighters such as Frank Bruno, Joe Calzaghe, Tyson Fury and Prince Naseem Hamed. Tyson Fury remains one of Queensberry Promotions’ most recognisable names.

Arsenal roots and early influences

He comes from an Arsenal-supporting family. His brother Robert is the notable Spurs exception.

Warren names Joe Baker as a childhood football hero. He also partnered in nightclubs with former Arsenal player Frank McLintock.

Great fights and favourite fighters

Warren cites Sugar Ray Leonard as the best boxer he saw live. He also remembers the brutal Tommy Hearns versus Marvin Hagler match.

On film, he admires Sugar Ray Robinson for moving across multiple weight classes. He supports adding junior divisions like super-middleweight.

Safety reforms and medical funding

After high-profile injuries, Warren pushed for better medical checks in boxing. He helped finance the switch from CT scans to MRI scans with the British Boxing Board of Control.

Only one trainer contributed additional funds, about £1,000. Warren continues to work with neurologists to improve fighter safety.

The Benn–McClellan fight

He was ringside in 1995 when Gerald McClellan suffered a life-changing brain injury in his bout with Nigel Benn. Warren calls it a terribly difficult night.

The shooting and recovery

Warren survived a serious shooting. The bullet passed through his lung and broke three ribs.

He discharged himself from hospital. He lost nearly four stone and returned to work after recovery.

At the time, police warned his pregnant wife there was only a 50-50 chance he would survive. Warren now says he knows the shooter’s identity.

Meeting Nelson Mandela

Warren received an unexpected invitation from Nelson Mandela’s office. He flew to Johannesburg to discuss boxing.

Mandela thanked him for supporting South African boxing. Warren describes Mandela as the most impressive person he has met.

Legacy and ongoing work

Warren remains active in boxing promotion and safety initiatives. He continues to mentor fighters and organise major events.

His career mixes big names, controversial moments, and a drive to make the sport safer for future generations.
