West Brom Vs Charlton: west brom vs charlton ends 1-1 as Baggies winless in 10

west brom vs charlton finished 1-1 at The Hawthorns on Tuesday evening as Lyndon Dykes rescued a point for Charlton with a 70th-minute finish that was his second goal for the club. The draw stretched West Bromwich Albion's winless run in the Championship to 10 games and left the Baggies 21st, one point above the relegation zone, while Charlton remained 17th on 41 points from 34 games after their 11th draw of the season.

West Brom Vs Charlton match

The match at The Hawthorns produced a shared point after George Campbell headed Albion in front in first-half stoppage time from an Alex Mowatt corner and Lyndon Dykes levelled on 70 minutes. Campbell's header capped a dominant first half for the hosts, who registered more than 60% possession and had six shots to Charlton's one before the break.

First-half dominance and goal

Albion enjoyed the better of the opening period. Campbell earlier had an awkward effort saved from close range and Charlie Taylor flashed a volley narrowly off target. Max O'Leary was called into action to save a speculative strike from Harry Clarke, and the pressure paid off late when Alex Mowatt swung a corner to the back post and Campbell climbed highest to nod home in stoppage time to send Albion in 1-0 at half-time.

Second-half chances and equaliser

The hosts began the second half with further openings. Josh Maja was sent through one-on-one in the 52nd minute by a delightful Mowatt through ball but slid wide and squandered the clearest opportunity to make it 2-0. Both Nat Phillips and Charlie Taylor later headed crosses over, and Isaac Price diverted a finish wide after a promising run and pass from Jayson Molumby in the 69th minute when Price somehow blazed over from inside the area.

Charlton struck a minute after that missed chance: Lyndon Dykes raced on to a ball over the top from Kayne Ramsay — beating the Baggies' offside trap — and calmly finished between Max O'Leary's legs, described elsewhere in the match chronology as slotted under O'Leary, to make it 1-1 on 70 minutes and secure a point for the visitors.

Reactions from Eric Ramsay

West Bromwich Albion head coach Eric Ramsay said it was a game they should have won and highlighted that the team had created good chances in open play. He stressed that Albion had territory at the top of the opposition's box and should have converted more than a single set-play goal, adding that a lack of decisiveness from a defensive perspective left them vulnerable. Ramsay said they had felt positive at half-time about the direction of the game and expected to be the team to score again, but ultimately they failed to do so in a match they should have put to bed.

Nathan Jones on performance

Nathan Jones described the result as “a good point” but said Charlton's overall performance needed to improve. He felt the team were flat in the first half and noted there had been a big travel issue before the game which coincided with a poor opening 45 minutes. Jones said: “I thought the performance on Saturday [against Southampton] was better than the performance today. I felt we were flat first half. We had a big [travel] issue before the game which we don’t know if it affected us but it coincided with a really poor first half. We didn’t really lay a glove on them first half, we had no quality, no energy, we lost battles. In the second half we were better but we had to change shape, we had to change personnel and then we were better second half. ”

On the equaliser he praised Lyndon Dykes: “The run was good, the touch was even better and the finish was outstanding. We’re pleased with the goal, it was the one time that we demonstrated a little bit of quality. ” Jones added that, despite being happy with the point, the performance level was not good enough for a win and that two points from two difficult away games was a decent return, referencing what Southampton had done to QPR that night to underline the value of the result.

Injury and next fixtures

Charlton’s 2024/25 Player of the Year, Lloyd Jones, had to be substituted in the 35th minute with what looked like an ankle injury. Nathan Jones said the central defender would need to be assessed before any update on the seriousness of the injury could be given. The result leaves West Brom's next game away at fellow strugglers Oxford United on Saturday, while Charlton are next in action at The Valley on Saturday, February 28th when they host Wrexham in the Sky Bet Championship. The match summary noted that Charlton recorded a second successive 1–1 away draw.
