Jim Hughes, who called the experience “really enjoyable, ” sat with family and friends when the men played and watched the U. S. women’s team win gold in a 2-1 overtime victory against Canada, where his wife, Ellen, served as a consultant for the women’s squad. Jim said he moves around to support both sons and his wife during the Games and that the family has been spending time with other players’ parents at the arena.

Summer skates, familiar faces and a role in player development

Back home, Jim runs summer skates at USA Hockey Arena as director of player development for CAA Hockey, and he credited daily practice habits for the on-ice results. He said, “I just have to blow the whistle, ” and described how drills and competition in summer sessions push players to improve. A core group that has skated in those sessions includes Dylan Larkin, Cole Caufield, Kyle Connor, Andrew Copp, Connor Hellebuyck, Tyler Motte, Josh Norris, Alex Turcotte, Zach Werenski, Trevor Zegras and others who have been part of the U. S. men’s roster in Milan.

The Hughes family has also hosted visiting players over the years; the context notes that Team Canada center Macklin Celebrini has stayed with Jack, Quinn and their brother Luke, and that Swiss defenseman Roman Josi has attended summer skates at the arena.

With the quarterfinal win secured, Team USA now turns to the semifinal matchup against Slovakia at Santagiulia Arena on Friday at 3: 10 p. m. ET.
