In the upcoming special primary election for New Jersey’s 11th Congressional District, eleven Democrats are competing to succeed Mikie Sherrill. The election will take place soon, and the primary winner will challenge Republican nominee Joe Hathaway, the Mayor of Randolph Township, in April.

Key Candidates and Endorsements

Analilia Mejia: Director of the New Jersey Working Families Alliance, Mejia has garnered endorsements from prominent progressive figures like Senators Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren.
Tom Malinowski: A former congressman from a neighboring district, Malinowski is backed by Senator Andy Kim, who praised his congressional experience.
Tahesha Way: The former lieutenant governor is another candidate drawing attention in the race.
Other Candidates: Additional contenders include Passaic County Commissioner John W. Bartlett, venture capitalist Zach Beecher, and Essex County Commissioner Brendan Gill, among others.

Core Issues in the Election

Immigration is becoming a central topic of discussion among the candidates, especially following recent controversies involving federal enforcement actions. Mejia advocates for the abolition of ICE, emphasizing a radical shift in immigration policy. Other candidates, including Way and Beecher, are calling for a reevaluation or outright elimination of the agency.

Addressing affordability issues is also crucial, as the high cost of living in New Jersey remains a pressing concern for voters.

Regional Impact on the Race

The 11th Congressional District includes a significant number of commuters to New York City. The next representative will also have to tackle funding for vital infrastructure projects, such as the $16 billion Gateway Tunnel project that connects New Jersey to Manhattan.

Micah Rasmussen from Rider University notes that this project was a major priority during Mikie Sherrill’s tenure in Congress. The new representative will inherit the responsibility to advocate for its completion.
