Chargers Appoint Chris O’Leary as Defensive Coordinator
The Los Angeles Chargers have announced the appointment of Chris O’Leary as their new Defensive Coordinator. This transition comes after Jesse Minter, the former DC, was named head coach of the Baltimore Ravens. O’Leary, who previously coached the Chargers’ safeties, brings a wealth of experience to the role.
Chris O’Leary’s Background
Before joining the Chargers, O’Leary served as the defensive coordinator at Western Michigan. During his time there, he led the team’s defense to a commendable 10-4 record, culminating in their first Mid-American Conference Championship. O’Leary has also held various positions at Notre Dame over six years, gaining significant coaching experience.
Defensive Achievements
- In 2024, O’Leary helped the Chargers achieve the No. 1 NFL defense in points allowed.
- Last season, the Chargers ranked in the top 10 for both points and yards allowed.
Chargers Head Coach Jim Harbaugh is optimistic that O’Leary will maintain the defensive momentum established by Minter. Alongside O’Leary, Mike McDaniel, a former head coach of the Miami Dolphins, has been appointed as the offensive coordinator.
Looking Ahead
With O’Leary and McDaniel on board, the Chargers aim to enhance their performance in the upcoming 2026 season. After consecutive wild-card playoff exits, the team is eager to make significant strides forward.
