NY Governor Hochul Declares Emergency Ahead of Looming Snowstorm

New York Governor Kathy Hochul has declared a state of emergency in anticipation of a significant snowstorm impacting the entire state. This declaration will streamline the deployment of resources during the storm. Hochul is collaborating with New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani to ensure the city’s snow preparations are thorough.

Emergency Preparedness Measures

The governor highlighted the extreme cold expected during the storm, with temperatures possibly feeling like they are below zero. She urged residents to recognize the signs of frostbite and advised them to stay indoors as much as possible. Hochul recommended that people stock up on essentials such as food, gas, and emergency supplies before the storm hits.

Impact on Voting and Workforce

  • Early voting in New York City’s special elections, scheduled for Sunday, will be suspended, with notifications to voters regarding makeup hours.
  • All state employees will work remotely on Monday to minimize road traffic and aid snow clearance efforts.

Transportation and Utility Readiness

The Department of Transportation has been actively treating major roads to prepare for the upcoming storm. Hochul reported that there are 114,000 tons of salt available, along with over 1,600 large plows and 149 medium plows ready for deployment. Additionally, more than 5,000 utility workers are on standby to address any power outages.

Safety Recommendations

In light of the impending storm, Hochul offered several tips for residents:

  • Ensure that you are stocked up on supplies, including food, blankets, and water.
  • If venturing outside, dress in layers to stay warm.
  • Pre-charge cell phones in case of power interruptions.
  • If driving, carry cat litter and a shovel to assist with traction if you become stuck.
  • Seal door bottoms with rolled-up towels to prevent cold air from entering your home.

Westchester County Emergency Declaration

In addition to the state-level declaration, Westchester County has also declared a state of emergency starting Saturday night, lasting for five days. County Executive Ken Jenkins advised residents to gather essentials and remain indoors throughout the storm’s duration.

Projected Snowfall Forecast

New Yorkers can expect between 6 to 12 inches of snow from Sunday into Monday. The heaviest snowfall is anticipated in the city and northern suburbs, while areas south and east of the city may experience a mix of snow, sleet, and freezing rain.
