Dana White Addresses Gaethje’s Pay Controversy: ‘He Was Offered More Money’
During a recent media session ahead of UFC 324, Justin Gaethje voiced his concerns regarding fighter pay amidst the UFC’s new broadcasting deal. This $7.7 billion, seven-year agreement with Paramount aims to enhance compensation for fighters but has left some, like Gaethje, questioning the immediate benefits.
Gaethje’s Pay Controversy
Gaethje disputed claims by former fighter Daniel Cormier, arguing that he has not seen a significant increase in pay. Despite having earned 14 post-fight bonuses, he lamented that his earnings haven’t reached the million-dollar mark. He stated, “I’m not getting one dollar more [for UFC 324] than I would have if this deal did not happen.”
Dana White Responds
UFC CEO Dana White addressed these concerns on The Pat McAfee Show. He revealed that Gaethje was offered an increased contract leading up to his interim title fight against Paddy Pimblett. White noted, “Gaethje was offered more money, and Gaethje never responded.” However, he reassured fans and fighters alike that the organization is on good terms with Gaethje.
Implications of the New Deal
White has frequently mentioned that the new broadcasting deal with Paramount will result in higher salaries for fighters. This deal significantly surpasses the previous contract with ESPN. There is also an expectation that post-fight bonus amounts will rise, although specific numbers have not yet been disclosed.
Current Bonus Structure
- Current post-fight bonus: $50,000
- New deal with Paramount: Expected to benefit fighter compensation
White asserted that the company has a comprehensive plan for adjusting compensation based on the new deal, saying, “We completely have it dialed in.” He emphasized that the UFC is ready to ensure fighters receive appropriate rewards, even as pay-per-view bonuses phase out with events now streaming on Paramount+.
UFC 324 Highlights
UFC 324 marks the inaugural event under the new broadcasting agreement. The main event features Gaethje and Paddy Pimblett, with the winner set to be crowned the interim lightweight champion.
