Canadian Passport Holders Gain Visa-Free Access to China This Week

Starting this week, Canadian passport holders can travel to China without a visa. This new policy is set to remain in effect until December 31, 2026. The announcement comes from China’s Foreign Affairs Ministry and signifies a change in the relationship between Canada and China.

Details of the Visa-Free Travel Policy

According to the official statement, Canadian citizens can stay in China for up to 30 days. The visa exemption applies to travel for various purposes, including:

  • Business
  • Tourism
  • Visiting family and friends
  • Exchanges
  • Transit

Interestingly, this policy also extends to passport holders from the United Kingdom. Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand supported the change via social media, emphasizing that it will enhance travel, promote business exchanges, and strengthen the relationship between the two countries.

The Road to Visa-Free Access

The idea of offering visa-free access to Canadians was initially raised in January. It followed a meeting between Prime Minister Mark Carney and Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing. During this visit, Carney expressed optimism about a tentative agreement that included cooperation on both clean and conventional energy sectors.

Despite progress in certain areas, challenges remain. The ongoing tariff disputes between Canada and China, related to Canadian agricultural products like canola seeds, still require resolution.

Historical Context

For many years, Canadian tourists faced extensive application procedures and significant fees—approximately $140—just to enter China. In recent years, China has begun to ease visa requirements for several Western nations. This approach is an effort to rejuvenate tourism post-COVID-19, despite previously maintaining strict visa rules for Canadians amid diplomatic tensions.

The introduction of visa-free travel for Canadian passport holders represents a notable shift. It is a positive step forward in mending ties and encouraging reciprocal travel between Canada and China.
