Italy’s Brignone Uncertain About Cortina Alpine Skiing Race on Sunday
Italian alpine skier Federica Brignone is facing uncertainty regarding her participation in the upcoming downhill race at the Milano Cortina 2026 Olympics. Scheduled for Sunday, Brignone is still evaluating her physical condition following a serious injury sustained last April.
Brignone’s Recovery Journey
Brignone suffered multiple leg fractures and a torn anterior cruciate ligament, leaving her in a wheelchair just days after the incident. The 35-year-old athlete expressed her current emotions, stating, “I don’t even know if I’ll do the downhill on Sunday; I’m just happy to be here.”
Comparisons to Lindsey Vonn
She compared her recovery to that of U.S. skier Lindsey Vonn, who also faced ACL injury challenges but plans to compete. Brignone noted, “If her injury had been as serious as mine, Vonn wouldn’t be here. But she’s a great woman and very courageous.”
Future Competitors and Home Advantage
Before her injury, Brignone was a top contender for the Winter Games alongside her teammate Sofia Goggia. As part of the event festivities, she will carry the Italian flag during the opening ceremony alongside three other athletes.
This marks a significant moment for Brignone, as it is her first Olympic experience on home soil. She reflected, “I’ve never raced at a home Olympics. Everything has been different from the start.”
