Miami Airport Introduces Faster Security Checkpoint Process

Miami International Airport has implemented a new security procedure designed to expedite the traveler experience. The innovative TSA PreCheck Touchless ID utilizes facial recognition technology to streamline the identification process for eligible passengers.

Overview of TSA PreCheck Touchless ID

This technology allows TSA PreCheck members to pass through security without presenting their physical ID or boarding pass. According to Dan Velez, a TSA spokesperson for Florida, the verification of a traveler’s identity takes under four seconds.

How It Works

Passengers enter a dedicated lane and look into a camera that captures their live image. This image is securely matched against their stored passport information for swift identification. The rollout is intended to create a faster, more seamless experience at security checkpoints.

Locations and Availability

  • Checkpoints using TSA PreCheck Touchless ID at Miami International Airport include:
    • Checkpoint 1 – Concourse D
    • Checkpoint 5 – In front of Concourse E
    • Checkpoint 8 – Concourse H

American Airlines passengers can utilize Checkpoints 1 and 5, while Alaska Airlines customers can access Checkpoint 5. Delta Air Lines and United Airlines flyers will benefit from Checkpoint 8.

Enrollment and Process

To take advantage of the Touchless ID, travelers must opt-in through their airline’s app or profile. It is essential to have the TSA PreCheck Known Traveler Number and valid passport information on file. A specific indicator will appear on the mobile boarding pass to show eligibility.

Although the new technology aims to make security checks smoother, passengers are advised to carry physical IDs as a backup. TSA agents may request them on occasion.

Future Expansions

As of now, Touchless ID is available only for TSA PreCheck members, who can enroll online. Rollout of this technology at additional TSA checkpoints at Miami International Airport is expected.

Stephen Taber, the TSA’s Federal Security Director for Miami, remarked that this innovation represents significant progress in modernizing airport security, enhancing the passenger experience. This technology is already in use at over 40 airports across the United States, with more locations anticipated to adopt it soon.

Previous Implementations

The Touchless ID system was first introduced at Detroit Metropolitan Airport in 2021. Its presence at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport began in January, with expectations that many others will follow suit by March.
