BOM Website Surprises with ‘Not a Failure’ Claim
The Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) has recently defended its $96.5 million website renovation, claiming it’s “not a failure.” BOM’s chief executive, Dr. Stuart Minchin, addressed concerns during a recent Senate estimates hearing. He stated the website, launched late last year, has achieved 80 to 90 percent of its goals, despite facing criticisms for not meeting every community need.
BOM’s Website Renovation Overview
- Renovation cost: $96.5 million
- Initiative announced: Late last year
- Intended outcomes met: 80-90%
- Major overhaul part of the ROBUST program: Total expenditure of $866 million
Dr. Minchin acknowledged that some user experiences were lacking but reiterated efforts to address these issues. He responded to Senator Malcolm Roberts’ assertion of the website’s failure by asserting it is not a total loss. “I think what has happened is… it’s missed on a few key user experiences,” Dr. Minchin stated.
Upcoming Improvements
In response to user feedback, the BOM plans several updates over the next six months. These enhancements aim to improve overall user experience and accessibility. Key updates include:
- Website navigation adjustments for easier access to weather data
- Improvements to the Android app’s radar map for clearer coverage indicators
- New postcode navigation features
Dr. Minchin noted that he was unaware of any staff being fired or demoted due to the website’s issues. Environment Minister Murray Watt also acknowledged that the changes had dissatisfied many users.
Background Information
The major website overhaul was part of BOM’s comprehensive IT upgrade following a cyber attack in 2015. This initiative formed part of the broader ROBUST program, which included significant investments in new supercomputers, enhanced connectivity, and security measures. However, the upgrades faced challenges during the Covid pandemic, impacting their rollout.
As BOM continues to refine its website, the commitment to user-centered design remains a priority. The forthcoming updates are expected to further improve service delivery to all Australians.
