Highly Discussed Leerdam Seeks Solitude: ‘I Prefer Staying in My Bubble’

Jutta Leerdam, the Dutch speed skater, has recently been at the center of media discussions. Ahead of her 1,000-meter event at the Olympic Games, she expressed a desire to remain in a personal bubble, focusing on her performance rather than engaging with the press.

Leerdam’s Decision to Avoid the Media

In light of the media attention, Leerdam stated, “I wanted to stay in my bubble and prepare for the competition. I don’t necessarily need to share a lot.” Despite being active on her social media, she chose not to communicate with journalists in Milan.

Media Complaints and Responses

  • Following her decision to avoid interviews, the Dutch Sports Press (NSP) submitted an official complaint.
  • The complaint was directed at chef de mission Carl Verheijen and NOC*NSF top sports director André Cats.
  • Leerdam later agreed to talk to the Dutch media, wanting to avoid escalating tensions.
  • However, after a tense interview, she left the venue without engaging with reporters.

Focus on Performance

Leerdam emphasized her need for concentration, stating, “I have not much to share.” She is committed entirely to improving her performance on the ice.

Injury Concerns

A sensitive topic for Leerdam is her ankle, which troubled her two years ago to the point of tears. Recently, footage showed her physiotherapist using a hammer on her ankle, prompting questions.

Addressing this, Leerdam commented, “We do that quite a lot. It’s something that works for me. We’ve found a method to manage it well.” She avoided discussing specifics but highlighted the importance of maintaining her physical condition to perform effectively.

Competitive Mindset

When it comes to her competitors, Leerdam prefers not to think about them. “I will only know what the circumstances are once I cross the finish line,” she said. “I feel good and fit, and I want to deliver a strong performance.”

Upcoming Competitors

Femke Kok is also anticipated to be a strong contender in the 1,000-meter race, marking her first Olympic experience with an audience.

Medals Update

As of now, no medals have been awarded in the skating events.
