Swiss Women’s Olympic Hockey Team Isolates After Norovirus Diagnosis

The Swiss women’s hockey team is currently in isolation due to a norovirus diagnosis affecting one player. The announcement was made on Friday by the Swiss Ice Hockey Federation. The team was scheduled to face Team Canada on Saturday at 9:10 p.m. local time, amid heightened health concerns.

Norovirus and Its Impact on Team Switzerland

A player tested positive for norovirus following a victory against the Czech Republic. This diagnosis surfaced shortly before the Olympic opening ceremony. The affected athlete did not participate in the match, as confirmed by a representative from the Swiss team.

The player has been isolated since arriving at the Olympic Village on February 2, 2026, and has shown no symptoms since early Friday. Swiss officials took precautions after consulting with the on-site medical team. Consequently, the team has opted not to participate in the opening ceremony of the 2026 Milan Winter Olympics.

Contagion Concerns and Medical Insights

Norovirus is known for its rapid spread. Dr. Nitin Mohan, an infectious disease expert, highlighted the virus’s explosive nature, especially in communal settings like the Olympic Village. “Norovirus is a sprinter of infectious diseases,” he stated, emphasizing its potential to proliferate in tightly packed environments.

Earlier this week, Finland also dealt with a norovirus outbreak. Coach Tero Lehträ reported that players showed signs of illness, resulting in a postponed game against the USA. The Finnish team is scheduled to compete on February 12 at 2:30 p.m. local time at the Milano Rho Ice Hockey Arena.

Game Schedule and Future Precautions

Despite health concerns, the U.S. vs. Finland game remains on schedule for Saturday at 4:40 p.m. local time. If any changes arise, teams will be notified before 11 a.m. Meanwhile, precautions are being closely monitored by the NHL and IIHF.

The men’s Olympic hockey tournament will begin next week. With NHL players already in Milan, the focus will remain on health and safety throughout the competition.
