AccuWeather’s senior meteorologist, Tom Kines, emphasized the risks associated with prolonged exposure to these harsh conditions. He stated that individuals outdoors for more than half an hour without adequate protection could suffer from frostbite or hypothermia.

The last time the city recorded such low temperatures was on February 4, 2023, when conditions dipped to 3 degrees. Interestingly, the coldest record for February 8 was set back in 1934, at -7 degrees.
Long-Term Outlook
The average temperature in New York City for February typically hovers around 35.9 degrees. Forecasts indicate that temperatures are expected to gradually rise next week, potentially reaching the 40s by mid-month.
However, after February 10, the extreme cold may return later in the month, particularly around February 25. According to Kines, this weekend’s chill might represent the coldest conditions New York City will encounter for the rest of the winter.
