SAQ Restocks Shelves With U.S. Products

Starting February 12, 2024, the Société des alcools du Québec (SAQ) will restock certain U.S. products nearing expiration. This initiative aims to raise approximately $9 million for food banks across Quebec. However, the SAQ does not plan to import new American products, focusing instead on liquidating existing stock.

Details on the U.S. Products Restock

Eric Girard, the Finance Minister responsible for the state-owned enterprise, announced on LinkedIn that the products include clear glass bottles, cream liqueurs, and sakes. Importantly, these items will only be available on SAQ.COM and at SAQ Dépôt locations.

Current Sales Restrictions

  • The sale of products not meeting established criteria remains banned.
  • This restriction, imposed on March 4, 2025, continues to apply.

The Ministry of Finance clarified that this action is not politically motivated, despite ongoing trade tensions between Canada and the U.S.

Discounts and Promotions

A 15% discount will be applied to all returning U.S. products. Additional savings include:

  • 5% off when purchasing 6 to 11 bottles.
  • 10% off for orders of 12 bottles and more.

The announcement from Minister Girard has been positively received. The Banques alimentaires du Québec expressed that this move is a welcome relief amidst unprecedented demand.

Prior to this, American products were removed from SAQ stores in March 2025 due to tariff disputes. This restock marks a significant change in the SAQ’s approach to dealing with these products.
